Ford Snags Rover name. Ford has announced it will take up the option to buy the Rover brand name from BMW, ending an ownership saga lasting several months. Shanghai Automotive which holds the design rights to the Rover 25 and 75 models and is about to commence production in China of a 75 derivative, was negotiating with BMW for the name rights and will not now be able to call the cars Rovers.

MG Rover, Rover is Over, or is it?
Is there some life for Rover after all?
The administrators of MG Rover UK have announced the sale
of MG Rover assets to Chinese company Nanjing Automobile. The amount of money
paid has so far not been disclosed. Nanjing was one of two Chinese companies
trying to buy the assets, Shanghai Automotive, who was the trigger for the
collapse when it pulled out of finance negotiations, was the other.
"Nanjing will now begin to take control of the assets and develop its plans for
the future," said Tony Lomas of PwC. Mr Lomas also announced that Nanjing
intended to relocate the engine plant and some car production plant to China but
to "retain some car production plant in the UK" and planned to develop an R&D
and technical facility in the UK.
Nanjing has indicated before it plans to use MG as its main marque in Europe
while developing other MG Rover brands, such as Austin, elsewhere. Whether
Nanjing will be able to sell cars under the Rover brand is still uncertain.
Shanghai Automotive bought the intellectual property rights to sell the Rover 25
and 75 models in China during its previous attempt to take over MG Rover. And
just to throw another spanner in the works, it is reported Honda who owns some
of the rights relating to the production of the Rover 45, based on the Honda
Civic, has repossessed equipment and blueprints, making it more difficult for
any buyer to restart production.
However, China is China, and there could well be "official" cooperation between
Nanjing and Shanghai Automotive in the future.

MG Rover Closure Local Australian Affects
|
Local affects: Over recent days I have spoken to both MG Rover Australia and local Melbourne dealer Zagame Automotive. MG Rover advise that they have stopped importing Rovers & MGs and will be quitting any stocks they currently have. Spare parts will continue to be available through Cat Logistics which bought the spare parts business from MG Rover UK last year. For recent buyers however MG Rover confirm that factory warranties have been cancelled (this was something the UK Administrators had already announced in April). Zagame confirmed that for the foreseeable future they will continue to offer service facilities for Rovers & MGs at their Richmond service centre. They confirm that spares for recent models will not be a problem, with Zagame having already organised a direct supply service from Cat Logistics in UK. They confirmed that there is no longer any effectual factory warranties, but that Zagame do offer a three year warranty at a cost of course. We understand that in the immediate term there is a warehouse full of parts for Rover 75s and MGs already stockpiled here in Melbourne by local arm of Cat Logistics. It is also understood that Cat Logistics has agreements in place in UK of continued manufacture of certain parts should this be needed. So, someone with a Rover 75 or MG can feel confident that servicing and parts will be available for their cars for some time to come. (Webmaster 14 May 05) |

Subject: News from Phoenix Venture Holdings LTD - 12/04/2005
From: "Phoenix Venture Holdings LTD" <mgr@newspress.co.uk>

Phoenix Venture Holdings Ltd
At a meeting on Monday 11 April 2005, Carl Chinn and Nigel Petrie agreed to
act as trustees for the Phoenix Consortium shareholding in Phoenix Venture
Holdings Ltd.
The trust will be known as the “Phoenix Trust” and will hold all beneficial
rights to the 40% shareholding held individually by John Towers, John
Edwards, Nick Stephenson and Peter Beale. Initially, the voting rights
associated with this shareholding will be retained by the four
shareholders, whilst matters become clearer. However, it is intended that
these rights will pass to the trust in due course.
The trustees will be given complete discretion to allocate any funds in the
trust to help the families and dependants of the Longbridge workforce.
John Towers said “It is not yet clear what the value of the PVH shares is.
PVH has significant assets totaling around £50 million but we believe a
reasonable estimate of its present value is between £10 million and £30
million. However it is important to note that this value is subject to
attack by 3rd parties associated with the administration of other parts of
the PVH Group”.
“The Phoenix Directors have also offered these assets to PWC to help fund
the administration process of MG Rover Group Ltd and Powertrain Ltd which
would make less assets available to the trust but this route would clearly
also be of benefit to the Longbridge workforce”.
Commenting on this proposal, Carl Chinn and Nigel Petrie said “We
acknowledge the responsibility placed on us to fulfill this important role
in support of the Longbridge workforce, at such a critical time. We will
be acting on a purely voluntary and independent basis”.
Subject to agreement with the Administrator for MG Rover Group, the trust
will also seek to incorporate and protect heritage assets associated with
the Longbridge site.

Phoenix Venture Holdings Ltd
Statement:
During the course of this past week the administrator, PWC, the Trades
Unions, the DTI and members of the management team have explored every
avenue aimed at avoiding today’s redundancy announcements.
Clearly, not enough progress has been made on this to provide comfort for
the administrators, and for the DTI, to continue the payment process that
began last week.
In May 2000, when Rover was saved from BMW’s liquidation process, a lot of
people said that the business could not last for more than 14 months. The
management and employees of MG Rover have defied those conventional
predictions and worked tirelessly to create a positive result. Almost five
years later, and within weeks of what we believe to be its natural long-
term outcome, it is devastating to be stopped at the final hurdle.
In a meeting with the administrators this afternoon, the directors of PVH
discussed whether any other possibilities, including use of PVH and
personal assets, could provide a further mechanism to allow employees to
continue to be paid. The conclusion of this discussion was that the best
use of those assets would be to quickly realise their value for the benefit
of the Trust established to benefit the families and dependants of the
Longbridge workforce.
This will enable the initial Trustees, Carl Chinn and Nigel Petrie, to
start providing financial assistance to the employees of Longbridge, and
their families. We can also announce that the Bishop for Birmingham, has
approached us, and has agreed to become a Trustee of that fund.
In addition to the many millions of pounds being made available for the
Employee Trust, we are also committed to provide any other support that the
administrators request in creating the best possible employment outcome for
this business emerging from insolvency. Despite a concerted view to the
contrary, we remain hopeful that car making at Longbridge is not at an end.
For all of us this is a desperately sad day. Our hearts go out to all of
our employees, their families, and the local community, at this terrible
time.

ROVER IMPROVE PRODUCT
APPEAL FOR 2005
New models and enhanced equipment levels are introduced across the Rover
product range in 2005. New models due in February feature enhanced
specification, combining equipment, comfort and value - all Rover virtues.
Rover's best-selling 25 range has three new extra model derivatives - the
GLi, GSi and GXi - that feature an attractive specification standardising
leather and wood trim items, extra equipment and competitive prices; the
Rover 25 GLi 1.4 (84Ps) 3-door (with leather seats) starts at £8,995.
New GLi and GSi models are also being launched on Rover's Streetwise and 45
models. The Rover 45 perpetuates the high specification theme with a GLi
model, exclusively built around the 1.4-litre 5-door bodystyle. Equipped
with leather trim to the seating, steering wheel and gearknob, the GLi also
features a CD tuner, controlled by steering wheel mounted remote controls.
Electric front windows, bright tread strips and body-coloured door mirrors
complete this high value model, available at £10,995.
The Rover 75 is an elegant expression of a beautiful style and interior
environment. All models now include extra equipment that includes head
airbag protection (ITS), electric front and rear windows and a leather gear
knob. SmartNav is also standard on all, except the entry Classic model.
Connoisseur models are now specified with a full leather interior, heated
seats and electric power folding door mirrors.
Commenting on the latest Rover models, Rod Ramsay managing director of sales
and marketing, said: "Rover's second century starts with a focus on the
virtues of its appeal. These new models deliver what Rover customers want: a
stylish, comfortable interior in leather, high specification and excellent
value."
Rover 75 Coupe Concept
As part of the Centenary Celebrations for Rover MG Rover have released details
of the Rover 75 Coupe. The following is from the official MG Rover Press
Release:
The company's design team wanted to mark the first 100 years of the Rover marque
with a stylish design that would sit confidently as the latest in the line of
renowned Rovers like the P4, the handsome P5 coupe, the innovative P6 2000 model
and the bold SD1 hatchback.
This has been achieved in the form of the Rover 75 Coupe concept – a beautiful
and elegant two-door expression of the stylish 75 Saloon. The concept's interior
strongly focuses on Yew wood and Tan leather hide introducing the style of
designer furniture into the automotive lounge, extending Rover's trademark for a
welcoming interior.
Peter Stevens, Rover's design director says: "I want people to turn away for a
moment from post modern brutalism and to enjoy the elegant and timeless lines of
the 75 Coupe's design. The true character of a Rover comes from its ability to
present a cosseting environment with comfort and refinement being the high
priorities, elements that should be expressed in the form and detailing of the
exterior of the car.
"Heritage is a great strength for a marque as it gives you the terms of
reference and something to build on for the future. That is exactly how we saw
the challenge of presenting a Rover concept in its Centenary year."
There are no details on whether the car will go into production or not.

GENEVA MOTOR SHOW DEBUT ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF THE 'ROVER V8'
2 March 2004
MG Rover Group today, at the 74th Geneva Motor Show, unveils a new 75-derived top-of-the-range Rover V8 saloon, in the marque's centenary year. The Rover V8 incorporates a bespoke Monogram interior and is distinguished by a new exclusive front-end treatment with large grille, wholly reminiscent of previous V8 engined Rover cars. The Rover V8 marks the return of this illustrious derivative, first introduced as the archetypal Rover P5B.
The V8 derivative provides effortless performance to the Rover range. Available initially as a highly specified flagship derived from the Connoisseur SE specification, the bespoke interior brings new levels of luxury to a car already renowned for its inherent comfort and quality. The lavish trim specification is complemented by a prestigious new development of the latest 2004 Rover 75 exterior style theme, incorporating a new full depth radiator grille and imposing front bumper design.
Kevin Howe, Chief Executive, MG Rover Group, commented: "The return of the illustrious Rover V8 combines perfectly with the distinctive identity of this high-specification flagship and signifies an expanding confidence for the Rover marque, in its centenary year. Like its predecessors, it is a product of distinction and presence, with the new full-depth grille and front-end treatment a characteristic reminder of the refined delivery of power available from the 4.6-litre V8 harnessed under the bonnet."
DISTINCTIVE NEW FLAGSHIP ROVER 75 V8
Rover V8 - Product Overview
The new full-depth open grille is reminiscent of the archetypal Rover P5B. Like the P5 and other V8-powered Rovers since, the imposing and distinctive appearance of V8 derivatives is matched by a motoring experience that has no peers in this segment of the market. The Rover V8 four-door saloon is derived from the company's much-respected large car 75 platform. Driving the rear wheels, the in-line mounted 4.6-litre engine is matched to a smooth automatic transmission to offer refined yet effortless performance, entirely in keeping with the Grand Touring associations of this famous marque.
The vehicle displayed at Geneva incorporates a number of elements from MG Rover Group's extensive customer personalisation Monogram range of paint colours, trims and individual features, and is an ideal way for the discerning customer to individualise this exclusive car still further. Rover's famously comfortable seats have been trimmed in leather, designed to complement Rover's new Light Oak wood theme. Wood and leather are used, with an elegant wood and leather steering wheel and handbrake grip. Underfoot, superior quality carpets have been specified, with additional tailored convenience mats.
A comprehensive range of high technology features is available to complement the opulent interior of this flagship car. These include GPS guided satellite navigation, in-car Teletext TV and multi-disc DVD player with motorised screen, while audiophiles will appreciate the exceptional Harman/Kardon Hi-Fi system. These interior refinements are complemented by prestigious large diameter alloy wheels and discrete exterior badging.
Under the bonnet, the flagship V8 power unit develops 260Ps and 410Nm of torque that is fed to the road through the rear-wheels. Cruise Control is standard equipment. MG Rover Group's unique traction control system ensures that this considerable torque is deployed to good effect, whatever the conditions, whilst delivering rapid acceleration up to a top speed in excess of 150mph.
Derived from the power train installation first used in the MG ZT 260 V8, the proven Ford sourced engine is now mated seamlessly to a smooth automatic transmission. A new electronic engine management tune and unique exhaust and intake systems provide an impressive combination of refined cruising and an assertive, sonorous soundtrack under hard acceleration.
The V8 chassis is derived from the acclaimed rear drive MG ZT platform, launched last year. However, substantial revisions to chassis tuning have delivered a more compliant ride without sacrificing the confidence and stability inherent in the basic platform. In keeping with the immense reserves of V8 torque, the chassis has been tuned to deliver a rewarding yet relaxing driving experience. A new traction control system provides fast engine intervention to wheel slip. This has been developed in a partnership between MG Rover Group, British electronics experts Racelogic and American engine specialists Roush Industries.
Rob Oldaker, MG Rover Group's Product Development Director, says: "This new derivative is an impressive addition to a distinguished Rover product range. The car's performance and poise will shorten any long-distance journey, though on arrival occupants will be reluctant to leave the luxury of this sumptuous interior!"
Performance and pricing
The Rover V8 has a maximum speed in excess of 150mph/240km/h, with acceleration to 60mph comfortably below 7 seconds. Precise market specification and pricing will be announced in due course. UK sales are expected to commence in May, followed across Europe mid-year.
The Rover V8 has been represented in products between 1967-1986 and is a hallmark of British cars with 'power in reserve'. Her Majesty The Queen owns two Rover V8s. In their day Rover V8s were specified by Prime Ministers Harold Wilson, James Callaghan and Margaret Thatcher. Previous V8-engined Rovers include the P5B 3.5-litre, P6B 3500, SD1 3500, V8S, 3500 Vanden Plas, Vanden Plas EFi and the 3.5-litre Vitesse.

motoring world. With the introduction of the Classic, Connoisseur and Contemporary
variants this interior is now available in three distinctive identities. In particular,
Contemporary models offer an entirely new and progressive interior based around a new
black oak wood finish. This provides a distinctive, younger and more continental flavour
to the cabin. Full leather seat trim is standard on SE derivatives of both Connoisseur and
Contemporary models.
Rear passenger entry, egress and accommodation has been improved with better foot and knee
clearance from re-profiled seat cushions and squabs.
Three interiors with individual taste and choice
Classic
The 75s Classic interior is a comfortable driving environment, creating an air of
luxury with traditional Burr Walnut, set in the Ash and Light Smokestone duo-tone fascia.
The famously comfortable Rover 75 seats feature upgraded Axis cloth trim, while door
casings are now trimmed in high quality Tuscany fabric. Air conditioning is now standard
on Classic derivatives, which also offer a CD tuner and leather steering wheel with
integral volume controls.
Connoisseur
The Connoisseur trim specification brings a new light, refreshing tone to the Rover 75
fascia with a Light Oak theme. The new Light Oak finish creates a distinguished ambience
reminiscent of traditional English oak panelling, an atmosphere which is further enhanced
by distinctive seat piping and a choice of Sandstone Beige or Ash combined with light
Smokestone interior colourways.
Standard features include fully automatic climate control, and electric front and rear
windows.
The Connoisseur SE features a wood and leather steering wheel, wood manual gear knob,
piped leather and heated electric seats with the added convenience of memory drivers
setting and reverse parking sensors. To help ensure the interior remains a place of pride,
convenient tailored carpet mats are standard.
Contemporary
Taking a fresh direction in Rover 75 styling is the Contemporary variant, where a Black
Oak theme sits perfectly with the purposeful environment of Black cloth trimmed
sports-style seats and Ash interior. Fully automatic climate control, front fog lamps, a
CD tuner and 16" multi-spoke alloy wheels complete the high specification.
The highly specified Contemporary SE raises the standard equipment to even more impressive
levels with attractive 17" Starspoke alloy wheels, black leather electric seats (with
drivers memory control), windscreen rain sensor, trip computer, parking sensors and
a premium Harman/Kardon hi-fi speaker system with amplifier. The innovative TrafficMaster
Traffic Alert System provides real time traffic congestion warnings across the UKs
busiest routes. Carefully designed option packs with selected convenience features are
available on both the Contemporary and SE derivatives to enhance ownership pleasure.
Security
For security and peace of mind, superlocking disables door and tailgate lock releases and
sophisticated electronic networks stand ready to trigger the alarm. Highly convenient
plip operated remote unlocking of the boot or tailgate is now available on all
derivatives, while a robust engine immobiliser and remote control with a continuously
changing security code complete the anti-theft defences.

THE
RETURN OF THE PRACTICAL BRITISH MUSCLE CAR
MG Rover Group has today (September 23) launched the V8 powered MG ZT 260 V8. The rear-wheel drive vehicle, available in ZT saloon and ZT-T estate car, powered by a 260bhp 4.6-litre V8 engine and with an awesome 410Nm of torque to deliver class-leading acceleration, is now available for customer order in the UK. With an on-the-road price starting at £27,995, the ZT 260 offers an unbeatable combination of price and performance.
Rob Oldaker, MG Rover Groups Product Development Director, commented: The MG ZT 260 V8 demonstrates our commitment to deliver cars of true pedigree and character. This is a truly rewarding car to drive. Our choice of a big, torquey engine has been vindicated as this is a deceptively quick and efficient cross-country car. The more you drive it, the more you appreciate its unique muscle car character that flies in the face of our competitors trend towards buzzy high-revving engines.
Its introduction means MG now has the broadest range in its 80-year history. The new V8 heralds the return of the practical British muscle car, and as an MG its obviously great value too.
Overview
The ZT 260 is a fully engineered evolution of the front-wheel drive ZT. Clever
installation techniques have permitted the larger capacity engine and rear-wheel drive
power-train to be incorporated within the robust bodyshell, without major visual changes.
Below the skin the platform is largely new with significant changes to many functional
vehicle systems to accommodate the revised drive-line layout, to produce a car of great
driving character.
Recently a development ZT-T V8 was taken to the Salt Flats at Bonneville, Utah where the
MG achieved a maximum speed of 225mph from a specially tuned V8 engine variant.
Design and Development
The development engineers were briefed to deliver the ultimate antidote to an anodyne
world. The challenges involved in transforming the drive platform and packaging a large
capacity V8 engine into the existing front-wheel drive vehicle should not be
underestimated. Advanced computer techniques were used to package the new hardware without
sacrificing the strengths of the established ZT platform. Sophisticated modelling
techniques were used to refine the kinematics of the completely new multi-link rear axle
configuration and to ensure that despite the revised engine installation, the car
continues to meet the latest standards for occupant protection in all its markets.
Given the magnitude of the changes, it is no surprise that ZT has been extensively tested,
seeing action in climates ranging from the bitterly harsh conditions of the Swedish winter
through to the burning heat of high speed testing in Arizona and Australia.

Externally there is little clue to the extent of body structure changes necessary to
accommodate the new rear-wheel drive powerunit, indeed ZT 260 shares the same acclaimed
style of the front-wheel drive ZTs. Extensive changes have been made to the underfloor,
with new designs for the front and rear floor, as well as an enlarged transmission tunnel
to accommodate the in-line gearbox. A new manufacturing facility has been commissioned
alongside the existing sophisticated ZT manufacturing line to ensure these changes to the
body are delivered to consistently high quality standards.
Powertrain
The ZT 260 utilises Fords proven 4.6-litre V8 engine, widely used in North America
to power the iconic Ford Mustang. Modifications have been made to the powertrain to assist
in packaging the engine while MGs engineers have also developed new intake, exhaust
and emissions control systems to ensure the vehicle complies with stringent European noise
legislation with no loss of power or torque. A new electronic engine calibration helps
ensure the car exceeds current European emissions legislation.
The exhaust system, twinned for most of the length of the car, is distinguished by new
quad-tailpipes. Outside the system produces a classic V8 burble, while inside the cabin
remains quiet until aroused by the throttle when it resounds to the sporting note of a
true thoroughbred.
ZT 260 features Tremecs TR3650 five-speed manual gearbox, manufactured in North
America. The unit has been extensively modified to meet MGs needs and features
unique gearing to suit the demands of European driving. MGs engineers have also
developed an all-new gear selection system and bespoke hydraulic clutch actuation to
ensure precise and positive gear changes.
The rear axle features Danas Hydratrak® limited slip differential system, which
utilises vane-pump principles to ensure continuous and seamless torque transmission to
both rear wheels in the event of wheel speed differential.
Steering and Suspension
The ZT 260s steering and suspension systems have evolved radically to match the
performance of the V8 power unit. Developed by driving enthusiasts for enthusiasts, the
team focused their efforts on honing the cars classic rear-drive handling to provide
seamless, fluid and adjustable attitude control under the widest range of conditions. The
result is a car that blends day-to-day ease of use with the driver-rewards of a true
thoroughbred.
Power steering, driven by a higher capacity pump, is now via a new forward mounted rack
layout providing excellent feel and driver feedback to the leather-bound wheel.
The geometry of the ZT's MacPherson strut front suspension has been tuned to the
requirements of the new chassis platform. A new design of upright is matched to Eibach
linear rate springs and a new, larger diameter anti-roll bar. Wheel response is controlled
by Bilstein monotube struts, which combine a large piston area for fine tuning resolution
with very high bending stiffness for improved camber control. The design employs a
significantly revised subframe, which provides a stable operating platform for the chassis
while also acting as a key loadpath in the event of a major impact.
A new multi-link rear suspension has been developed specifically for the ZT 260 V8. A new
six-mount subframe houses the Hyrdratrak® differential, while each wheel is located by
three lateral links (two steel and one light-alloy) and a light alloy trailing arm.
Compound rate springs, also sourced from race specialist Eibach, work in conjunction with
Bilstein monotube dampers to provide excellent wheel control. Roll behaviour is controlled
by a new anti-roll bar.
Both ZT 260 models feature 18 alloy wheels; the attractive Straights
design is specified on the ZT 260 with a new Apex 10-blade design on the ZT
260 SE. Contisport 225/45 ZR18 tyres balance excellent lateral stability with crisp,
precise steer response.
Braking
ZT 260 has a new H-split braking system providing excellent stopping power. At the front,
proven large capacity 325mm ventilated discs and sliding-pin callipers are specified. At
the rear a new AP-Racing sourced brake system is specified with 332mm ventilated discs and
opposed piston alloy callipers.
Interior environment
A new HEVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning) unit is fitted to the ZT 260. The
new unit is a water-blend design featuring a dedicated electronic control unit to drive
servo-motor valves to regulate the water flow around the heating circuit. This system has
been refined to offer similar levels of response and control to the existing ZTs
acclaimed air-blending system. All models feature ATC (Automatic Temperature Control),
using the familiar user-friendly interface of other ZT models.
A discreet V8 badge in the centre of the fascia differentiates the interior of the car,
while other aspects of the cabin environment are broadly similar to the existing ZT
models.
A new moulding below the boot floor accommodates the relocated battery and the CD
autochanger (standard on the ZT 260 SE). Major controls, which include steering, clutch
and gear selection have all been refined to suit the ZT 260 V8s more muscular
character.
Black leather trim, highline satellite navigation that includes a Teletext equipped TV
tuner and park distance sensors are but a few of the features that distinguish the SE.

Rover Celebrates The Five-millionth Rover
Rover has announced that on July 10 2003 it built its five-millionth car since production began in 1904. Kevin Howe, Chief Executive, MG Rover Group, said: "Though MG Rover Group is a relatively young company, the Rover marque represents a very important historical legacy. Next year we'll be celebrating Rover's centenary, which will also hold special significance."
The five-millionth Rover is a 75 Saloon, powered by a K Series 2.5-litre V6 engine, and painted in a special Xirallic® Aubergine paint finish. The car is upholstered with unique Oyster leather seats, an aubergine Personal Line interior and Connoisseur SE specification, with Hi-Line satellite navigation and many additional top-of-the-range items that combine to make this a special Rover.
The most popular Rover ever was the Rover 200 (R8) model launched in 1989 and the first application of the legendary lightweight K Series engine still fully utilised in higher-output current products. The five-millionth Rover car will be retained by the company, in preparation for Rover's centenary celebrations next year, in 2004. In the UK you can buy a replica of this car. It will go on sale priced at £29,995, with a Sony DVD option at £2,499.
MG Rover has also released an "Official" production table by model from 1904. You can download a pdf document of this here. (You will need the free Adobe PDF Reader to view this available from Adobe)
